Abstract

Electrospun nanofibers (ENFs) have revolutionized drug delivery systems (DDS) with their large surface area, exceptional flexibility, and ability to encapsulate a wide range of therapeutic drugs. Ultrathin fibers can be produced by electrospinning to improve medication loading, controlled release, and targeting, increasing therapy efficacy and safety. This article looks at how electrospun nanofibers can be used in drug delivery by examining their physical and chemical properties, how they are made, and the different ways drugs can be loaded and released. This article specifically highlights the benefits of ENFs in the controlled and sustained release of medications, including the use of stimuli-responsive devices for site-specific drug delivery. Furthermore, the article emphasizes the incorporation of electrospun nanofibers into cutting-edge applications such as cancer treatment, antimicrobial therapies, and gene delivery. Notwithstanding their potential, obstacles still exist, including restrictions on the cost, production speed, and material selection. Future studies should concentrate on developing smart nanofiber technologies, investigating novel materials, and refining production techniques to overcome these issues and provide more effective, customized medication delivery options. Further advancements in electrospun nanofibers could transform DDS and provide better therapeutic results in the domains of medicine, agriculture, and the environment.
