Introduction: Energy law is increasingly complex, involving national, international, and transboundary legal frameworks. Although it has emerged as a distinct field, its integration into legal education remains inconsistent and is often limited to specialized electives. Its interdisciplinary nature, encompassing property, contract, administrative, environmental, and international law, makes it valuable for integrative legal education. This study examines the pedagogical and institutional role of energy law within general legal education.
Objective: This study aims to assess the current status of energy law education within legal curricula, identify barriers to its systematic integration, and propose a framework for interdisciplinary energy law pedagogy. Specifically, it examines the scope and content of energy law, pedagogical approaches adopted by leading law schools, challenges to curricular integration, and strategies for incorporating energy law into foundational and advanced legal education.
Methodology: The study comprised a mixed methodology that included a systematic review of energy law courses in 15 Australian, British, Canadian and American law schools, semi-structured interviews with 12 energy law academic specialists, and a survey of 85 law students taking energy courses. Patterns and gaps in the curriculum were identified using content analysis of course syllabi, program descriptions, and institutional policies. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied to analyze quantitative data, and thematic content analysis to analyze qualitative data.
Results: There is a considerable variation in the degree of energy law integration. Other institutions have established energy law centers, including the Centre for Energy Law (AUCEL), University of Aberdeen, and the Energy and Climate Change Law Institute of Queen Mary University, London. A large number of the law schools still consider energy law a niche subject. Some of the challenges are: Resource constraints and competing demands on curricular space, faculty lack of experience with energy-specific regulation, limited faculty cross-disciplinary collaboration with engineering, earth science, and public policy faculties, and perceived lack of the study of energy law being too specialized for foundational training. The students in integrated programs showed improved knowledge of regulatory governance, transactional skills and environmental compliance.
Conclusion: Energy law should be integrated more systematically into legal education because of its growing relevance to economic development, environmental protection, and geopolitical stability. Effective integration requires core energy law modules, interdisciplinary collaboration with related fields, experiential learning opportunities, and faculty development. Incorporating these elements can strengthen students’ understanding of complex energy-related legal issues and promote interdisciplinary legal competencies. The findings provide practical guidance for curriculum development and the advancement of interdisciplinary legal education.
